Animals can teach us a few things about how teams work and how to bring out the best in people. This is a fascinating area of study demonstrated through the Katherine Outback Experience, a show developed from years in the Australian outback by entertainer Tom Curtain.
Tom specialises in breaking in horses and working dogs that others have found difficult to train. By studying their personalities, Tom works out the secret to getting the best out of each animal and applies the same principles to his team. The lessons make a unique show for corporate events that want a show involving horses, a singer-songwriter and ideas for better team building. Tom has won multiple awards in Australian tourism and for his country music.
Quotes From Episode
"I just think if bosses are aware of how (staff) are feeling, what they could have gone through and even just being an ear or even if colleagues could read other people (and) be a bit more in tune with their body language, the team environment could really click into gear and become more efficient instead of everyone sitting back and doing enough to get by and watching the clock."
"(The horses) all had different personalities and it's just from getting smashed, bitten, kicked, run over, stomped, bucked off, bolting horses. So I'm very lucky to be here, to be honest, but each time I got hurt or injured, I'd try to remember what the horse was doing. It's like a jigsaw puzzle and I'm still trying to piece it together but I think that's just half the challenge."
