Wrapping up the holiday season with a few recent holiday watches, we are then jumping into our "crossover franchise" episode! This week, we are taking a close look at Ghidorah: The Three-Headed Monster and The Monster Squad. Ghidorah is the fifth installment in the Ishirō Honda Godzilla and Kaiju film universe that lives on in spirit today with Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) and Godzilla Minus One (2023), but began with the original and classic Godzilla (1954). By the time of Ghidorah, the series was wacky and goofy while still holding onto some of its allegorical meaning, but it is certainly divisive. Meanwhile, The Monster Squad mashes together a band of Universal monsters and a Goonies-like squad of teenagers who need to fight them off in a surprisingly early post-modern meta monster flick that is drenched in 80s tropes and style!
