Interviewing Vicki Cody was an honor and a privilege. I read both of Vicki's books and I felt like I had lived her life for a couple of weeks. Having spent a year consulting with the US Army, I was already familiar with the belonging, community, and commitment of the troops I witnessed. Not everyone is cut out for Army life, but Vicki, her husband, and her two sons are committed.
Vicki met her husband, Dick, at 16. Her books tell their love story, their heartaches, and their triumphs as Dick went on to become a 4-star general and Vice Chief of Staff of the US Army. Vicki's commitment to her husband, the Army, and to other Army wives and families is both inspiring and heroic. I am thrilled to have been able to spend time with this courageous, easy-to-be-with, and entertaining woman.
Vicki Cody spent 33 years as an Army wife, supporting her husband in his career. While raising their two sons and moving all over the United States and overseas, she served as a coach and mentor for Army spouses and as an advocate for Army families.
1st book: Army Wife
From the last days of the Vietnam War to the present-day war on terrorism, Army Wife: A Story of Love and Family in the Heart of the Army honors not just a commitment between spouses but a commitment to military life.
2nd book: Fly Safe
It is August 1990, and Iraq has just invaded Kuwait, setting off a chain reaction of events leading up to the first Gulf War. Vicki Cody’s husband, the commander of an elite Apache helicopter battalion, is deployed to Saudi Arabia—and for the next nine months, they have to rely on written letters in order to stay connected.
