In the wake of Spider-Man 3 (the movie AND the game, but in this instance the game) being less-than-stellar, Activision quickly ordered a new game that would ultimately attempt to make up for their previous entry's failings. What resulted was a very ambitious, divisive, and uncharacteristically moody game that has become something of a cult classic from the seventh generation that sees the titular character battling Venom and his own inner demons as he and the city of New York get swept up in a symbiote infection and invasion.
