Joshua Slocum was lost at sea before the Panama Canal was built and had to sail through the Straits of Magellan in Patagonia. Harry Pidgeon was a farmer from Iowa who built a wooden, engine-less boat on the beach in Los Angeles, California. It was a 34-foot gaff-rigged yawl called, the ISLANDER.
