We all have (at least) one. A vice of some kind. That thing we turn to when we want to avoid, numb, check out, or just unwind.
It brings us momentarily relief. Dopamine.
But then it brings us pain.
In her book, “Dopamine Nation”, Dr. Anna Lembke talks about how the pleasure and pain centers of our brain are so intwined that what goes up (pleasure), must come down (pain) and how our desire to seek non-stop pleasure is actually causing us MORE pain.
In this episode, I provide a brief “cliff notes” summary of her book, including some of the tools you’ll need to kick your vice to the curb.
