Ep 69: Midnight In Paris and Living In The Present — You Can't Go Home Again

Listen Later

The 2011 film Midnight in Paris presents Gil, a young screenwriter smitten with the Paris of the roaring 1920s.  A magical time warp sends him back to the world he longs for where he meets a woman of the 1920s who longs for the glories of La Belle Époque, the European golden age at the end of the 19th century.

Gil learns that we all long for times long ago that allure us with hopes of a glorious past but that instead we must live in the present, in the Now.

Zach and Rafe discuss Midnight in Paris and the nostalgia it represents and the lessons it leaves with us.  Along the way, we learn to neither scorn the past nor hold it up as an unattainable ideal; rather, we must understand the past and her people by measuring them in their time and take the Good that they send us through history.  Peace comes not through the pain of nostalgia but rather in living fully in the Age we were given.  We are here, right now, in our time, for a reason.

"This is your time; now go out and take it."
