For many believers prayer is the most difficult discipline of the faith. No matter how hard we try it seems like it is always kicked off our list for the day. But what if the reason it is so challenging is because it is the most effective way for us to see things from God's perspective? In this episode, pastor Philip Jackson continues his series on family disciplines with the discipline of prayer and how God uses it to frame our view of the world.

Types of Prayer:

  • Adoration - Praising God for who He is. (Matt 6:9)
  • Lament - Bringing your difficult circumstance to God to seek His perspective. (Matt 6:10)
  • Petition - Asking God for a specific outcome for your current situation. (Matt 6:11)
  • Contrition - Asking God for forgiveness for your sin (Matt 6:12)
  • Deliverance - Asking God for protection from a situation. (Matt 6:13)
  • Thanksgiving - Praising God for what He has done in your life. (Philippians 4:6-7) 
  • Guidance - Asking God for His perspective on a situation (Psalm 25:4-5)

    • Methods of Prayer:

    • Praying Scripture - Example: praying Psalm 91 in the first person.
    • Prayer in worship - Ephesians 5:19
    • Psalms - scripture set to music
    • Hymns - theology set to music
    • Spiritual Songs - testimony set to music
    • Pairing situations or questions with scripture.
