The Survivor’s Guide To Thriving

Ep. 82: Self-Criticism vs. Self-Awareness | A Conversation with Mark Jewell

Listen Later

We've all had experiences with self-criticism – the voice in our head tells us how we screwed up or how we should have shown up better or how much "less than" we are than the people around us. For some of us, that critical voice can push us to the point of being afraid to take action or we might even turn it outward – sending negativity at others to avoid how much we're tearing ourselves apart.

But what if we could shift that negativity into a more productive energy level?

In this episode, Mark and Amanda dig into criticism and its roots in shame, guilt and fear – and what it might look like to move toward a place of awareness instead. Their discussion includes:

  • A recent experience Amanda had involving shame triggers, "gremlins" and self-criticism
  • Why the word "should" is a red flag for shame and criticism self-talk
  • The emotional scale between shame and awareness
  • How we can re-evaluate our use of shame in self-evaluation and communication with others

And more!

Criticism is deep in the mental/emotional hardwiring for many of us. As we learn more and reconsider our approach, though, we can transform that negativity into something more productive and useful – self-awareness and growth.
