I’ve known Mike Robertson for well over a decade. One of the top coaches in the industry, I've learned a lot from Mike over the years and consider him both a close friend and mentor.

For those of you who don't know his history, Mike is the President of Robertson Training Systems and the co-owner of Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training (IFAST) in Indianapolis, Indiana. IFAST has been named one of the Top 10 Gyms in America by Men’s Health magazine numerous times, and was also a Fitness Award winner by Women’s Health Magazine.

Over his 20-year coaching career, Mike has worked with athletes from every major professional sport, including NBA and MLS' all-stars. He's also a writer, speaker, consultant and sought after educator across the fitness industry.

On this episode of the podcast Mike and I talk about “The Formula” for becoming a successful coach in the industry—both on and offline—along with the principles that withstand the test of time.

Let's go.

IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN

1. The base level below the level of coaching that coaches MUST learn if they want to be successful. Learning all the X’s and O’s

2. Why Mike wasn’t a great trainer from 2000-2005, what got him by, and what led him to develop the baseline skillsets every coach needs.

3. A KEY lesson Dax Moy taught me about coaching high level, affluent clients that you’d be crazy not to steal and apply.

4. From strength and conditioning and physical therapy to personal training, the many years and stages Mike went through and what he learned in each area.

5. If people like you they get a better training effect.” Why you need to learn how to get clients to like you more, and why this is a skillset.

6. The 3 steps to engage with your clients better, build better relationships, and improve communication.

7. The lessons I got from Mark Fisher and Michael Keeler's Coaching Conversations course that you can take and apply right away.

8. The importance of experience vs. content consumption/knowledge and why there has to be more investment in the former.

9. Why you need to spend at least 3-5 years of grinding and coaching everyone to become a great coach.

10. Why complex is your enemy and the reason you shouldn’t be “outlining your model” in the early stages of your career.

11. The secret sauce to getting clients results for years and NOT using any complex and complicated programming.

12. The principles Mike used to build a successful basketball strength and conditioning/development program.

13. Why Mike and I work on simplifying high level info and break it down to make it more manageable and usable for other coaches.

14. Our thoughts about the future of gyms, the industry and what will withstand the test of time.

15. The absolutely critical principles in building a successful online coaching business and how Mike has been doing it for over a decade.

And much, much more.
