Barnabas brings a transparent, honest look at his own identity discovery story and shares his personal, unique experience growing up as a pastor’s kid. We discuss how that shaped and informed his identity and how he discovered that his true identity actually comes from Jesus and not his parents’ faith. The observation and scrutiny on a pastor’s kid is like a sliding scale. So if you’re in a church of a 100 people, you’ll feel the same pressure as a PK in a church of a 1,000. It’s the exact same experience just expanded broader or narrower.
It’s easy for anyone, including myself, to parachute into someone’s life based off of one statement, sermon, interview out of context and start to make all kinds of assumptions. (Jonathan)
I deify things that make me feel good. The Christian idolatry is “I deify those people that I see as my conduit to God.” We tend to create this airbrushed picture of people who are our conduit to God. They introduced us to God and made God more real.
I was in a position where I knew and acted every single right thing and it led me to the wrong place.
I’m not always okay with mystery. I want to know what to do. Jesus is my identity, now I’ve got to go do something. (Jonathan)
