FROM THE MISSIONAL MAN PODCAST VAULT (SUMMER 2015):
In this empowering conversation with Sho Baraka, we dig deep into how to engage with culture on the mission based on Sho’s founding vision for Forth District. Forth District is an online collective of artists, makers, creatives, writers, thinkers, and activists calling Christians to think, make, and live more engaged with culture for the sake of the mission.

He has become an artist, philosopher, and social-thought leader in contemporary culture. He has spent nine years traveling the world as a recording artist and public speaker. He has done numerous overseas activist work, ranging from race relations in South Africa to establishing musical cohorts in Indonesia. He is a founding member of nationally known Christian hip-hop group 116 Clique. Sho Baraka is also the founder of Forth District.
He now desires to blend his artistic platform with his academic leanings to contribute a unique perspective in both arenas in hopes of raising the standard, thereby raising the culture. Sho currently lives in Atlanta, GA and co-leads a consulting network that is active in cultural renewal.
    SUMMARY
In this chat, we tackle questions and thoughts like…
“What is the story behind Forth District? Why does it exist?”
“How is your vision for Forth District unique from other work you’re involved in (like Humble Beast, Rebuild Network, Legacy Conference, I got Something to Say podcast show, etc.)?”
“How do you create a common space or vision for different people to express their unique stories together?”
“Is Forth District a proprietary ATL thing or can it be duplicated/modeled for other contexts?”
“What one thing would you want men to take away from the story of Forth District?”

    Summary & Intro

In this encouraging conversation, I go deep into the poetry and rhythm behind the artistic style and vision of Humble Beast founders and artists, Beautiful Eulogy. Beautiful Eulogy declares the Gospel through the medium of hip hop and spoken word poetry.
BIOGRAPHY (Taken from Humble Beast website)
Beautiful Eulogy is a Portland, Oregon-based group made up of artists Braille, Odd Thomas, and Courtland Urbano. The group introduces a distinct and directive sound that’s driven by a desire to worship and glorify the God of the Bible, based in the context of its members’ hip-hop roots and shaped by influences like electronic music, folk songs and old hymns.
    SUMMARY
In this chat, we tackle questions and thoughts like…
“Is music even a good means for communicating theology?”
“If I am trying to push an agenda to put my own aesthetic on display, I am missing the point of making much of Jesus.”
“Sometimes we have a tendency when it comes to art, we create false dichotomies where it’s always either or, either or, either or. My desire to do things in excellence is not antithetical to my desire to make Jesus known. In that also, there are things that I do throughout the course of my life that I attempt to do in excellence that is not necessarily declarative.”
“Excellence is not a false dichotomy from declaration.”
“It’s the intentions of the heart that has to come to the forefront: am I laboring for the approval or applause of man….or am I doing it ultimately to the glory of God that desires to do it with a posture towards humble obedience to God?”

Hearts of Men film: to release September 14, 2017
    First: The News
    Hey Missional Man Crew,
Today, I’m excited to announce that I’ve picked back up the podcast mic after over a year of silence. More on why later. For today, I’ve got three exciting announcements:

    * Never-before-Heard Interview: Episode #031 is a never-before-heard exclusive interview out of my archives: Men, Sexuality and the Hearts of Men Film with creative film producer and writer, Jason Pamer. Previously released as an exclusive local friends-only show I did as a live, online, private listening session with about five of my closest buddies back in July of 2015. The session spurred some powerful conversation and transforming thoughts. After two years in the vault, I am proud to share it with you guys for the first time ever.
    * Sound Quality: Highest produced episode so far. After 30 episodes of the show, I’m excited to reveal this highly produced episode combining both interview, a guest introduction, professional audio editing and engineering from my good buddy Mark Waters (15+ years experience) as well as mixing in professional film scoring and music from Executive Producer, Writer and Composer Tony Anderson of the Hearts of Men film (16+ years experience).
    * First Episode of a New Chapter: In the spirit of relaunching and refreshing, episode 31’s quality of sound and content will capture the new season I’m preparing for. Look for new releases of archived, never-before-heard interviews, new discussions to come, new speakers and guests and new approaches to both my style of conversation, topics to focus on and angles to take. I am entering a phase of experimentation, discovery and exploration. I hope you’ll join me for this exciting new adventure. It will all lead up to an exciting, BIG announcement in January 2018! Stay connected so you can be in the know.

    Second: The Podcast
Episode #31 will hopefully rock your world as it did mine on so many levels. First, it’s my first episode focused on a soon-to-be-released film (Hearts of Men). Second, it’s an incredibly candid and vulnerable talk on sexuality, lust, identity and the depths of our heart struggle to be loved by God and satisfied most in Him. Third, Jason Pamer is a humble guy, incredibly creative and a compelling storyteller. I have been anticipating this release for two years now. I can’t wait for you to experience it!
Below, you can listen to the episode or click the link to download it in iTunes or Stitcher Radio. However, I would recommend the easiest and most convenient way is to subscribe in the Apple Podcast App or Stitcher Radio app; it will automatically download the latest episodes for you. Also, you’ll see some questions to interact with as well as ways you can get involved with the film’s promotion, showings and helping raise the final funds in prep for its September 14, 2017, release (at select theaters).
Concerning quality, you’ll notice I loop in some powerful music from composer Tony Anderson, executive producer, writer and composer of Hearts of Men. I also looped in the audio version of their six minute official trailer from 2015 after my introduction around 5:45.

    Third: The Film
I had the exclusive honor along with a handful of people to actually preview the film in its entirety back in early 2017. One word: WOW! The quality of the film, the storytelling, the interviews,

  • Ep#029: Jeff Vanderstelt, Saturate unedited

A few months back I had an awesome interview with one of my favorite writers, pastors and teachers, Jeff Vanderstelt. He and I had a great chat about his testimony, his journey of faith, living out the mission of God everyday and more specifically his newest book “Saturate.”
In light of the upcoming VERGE and Saturate conferences in Atlanta April 21-23, 2016, I thought it was more than fitting to release this conversation early, raw and unedited. The official podcast release will hit by this Friday April 22nd. But I am releasing the unedited version for my friends going with me to the conference and you guys. So, consider yourself in the “in crowd” of the Missional Man Podcast.
    Enjoy!
And don’t forget to go and buy Jeff’s book Saturate and now his latest release Saturate: Field Guide.

    Episode Spotlight: Per Holtze

Per Holtze – Christian, husband, dad of 4 kids, business professional, operations director at a senior care facility, former candidate for city council, community leader, entrepreneur, and all-around humble, kind family man.

    Synopsis & Notes:
We can work toward excellence but we can’t solve all of it.
God will take care of the results of our work.
When it comes to family, you can’t get to quality time without some quantity time.
God doesn’t always provide the way we want Him to, but He certainly is known to be faithful. If we can trust in Him maybe we can stop chasing things we don’t need to chase.
Even my dad’s rest is spent exercising his mind.
It’s super easy to brush past our wives when it comes to work/life balance. So what role does your wife play in helping you find that balance?
How does the work/life balance flesh itself out with kids? (22 minutes)
Climbing the corporate ladder can become an idol when it replaces our family. We need to ask tough questions at that point.
We need to show people that family is great. It’s fun to have kids and love your wife. There is joy in that.
Idols are revealed when people are living to work instead of working to live. (Jonathan)
Our idols reveal what we are treasuring in our hearts. How we spend our time communicates something to our family and the people watching our lives.
We’d rather be poor and together as a family than be rich and live in roommate mode (Jonathan).

    Practical Resources and Helps
    LinkedIn Profile
Avoid some books that set us up for the wrong expectations. Have to be careful of the messages we put into our mind. I don’t have a great resource right now but maybe later.

    Action Round: 1TA & 1AI
    1 Take-Away (thought, summary, recap)
Most recently God has put something on my heart. As a Christ-follower I’m not afraid of dying, but sometimes I’m afraid of life. But I can’t be, that doesn’t make any sense. When I have that fear of life I tend to make poor decisions. So don’t be afraid of life. You only get one shot at it. Invest in your family. Don’t be greedy. Set boundaries for time and finances so you can have a fulfilling life.
    1 Action-Item (action, step, application)
Don’t try to escape life. Be present and accountable to work AND home. When you’re at work, work. When you’re at home and with your family, be with them. Be present. When people see you’re there with them and care for them you’ll get a lot more out of it. Be focused on being present.
