Temperament is how you are "wired" and drives your needs, values, actions, reactions, talent focus, your stress points, and the way you respond to stressors. This episode gives you the opportunity to identify your primary and secondary temperament influences, as well as consider how you might need to flex to meet the needs of others with different temperament drivers.

Idealist: Meaning, Significance, Unique Identity

Needs: Sense of purpose, working toward greater good, understanding relationship with leadership.

Values: Unity, self actualization, authenticity, cooperative and empathetic interactions, focus on ethics and morality.

Action: Trust intuition and first impressions, will seek data and logic to support instincts.

Talents: Bringing out best in diverse groups, conflict resolution, being a champion for the cause, personal growth

motivational speaking, teaching, and diplomacy.

Stressors: Insincerity, betrayal and lack of integrity.

Response to stressors: may withdraw, find new focus, nurture self.

 

Guardian: Membership, Belonging, Duty

Needs: Responsibility, stability and security.

Values: Loyalty, community, trust hierarchy and authority.

Action: Cooperative, focus on standards/norms, process structure, and practical application.

Talents: Logistics, maintaining tradition, timing, planning, leading, and interaction with right people at right time.

Stressors: Insubordination, action outside of their timing and plan, and lack of belonging.

Response to stressors: Complaining, tired, sick or worried, then inclusion in new news, activities and memberships.

According to Jeff Gainer, 1/10/1998 Critical Path article:

Guardians make up 40-45% of the population.

 

Rational: Skills & Knowledge Mastery, Self Control

Needs: Competence, understanding operating principles, development of theory.

Values: Expertise, consistency, progress and LOGIC.

Action: Generate facts and details to support concepts.

Talents: Strategic analysis, seeing overall goal and the method to achieve that goal with Plan A, B and C, architectural issues, science and technology.

Stressors: Incompetence, lack of knowledge, feeling powerless.

Response to stressors: Obsesses, can’t ‘think straight’, seeks new project to establish competence.

 

Artisan: Freedom to Act Now and Make an Impact

Needs: ‘Don’t try to hold me back’, and significant results from taking action and skillful performance.

Values: Aesthetics in nature, art and surroundings, variety and stimulation.

Action: Focus on technique, realistic and practical thought and action, trust instincts that drive their action, willing to experiment when relevance is clear, hands-on practice.

Talents: Resourceful, creative, seeing options – including improving existing designs and processes, utilizing figurative and literal tools, sensitivity to needs of situation and people, and identifying desired outcome. Arts and entertainment.

Stressors: Constraint, lack of impact, non-relevance.

Response to stressors: Seek options, new ways to achieve meaning and impact, seek new activities and affiliations.
