Dana

Hey! maya’, What does ’ima SaSo’ mean in SaySiyat language?

maya’

’ima SaSo’ in SaySiyat means new.

Dana

Yes. It is a brand new cross language podcast brought to you by ilrdf, Indigenous Languages Research and Development Foundation.

Dana

So when I first came to Taiwan, the first Indigenous language I encountered was Atayal, but now, after way more than ten years of living in Taiwan, this is my first introduction to 賽夏語, so maya’,節目剛開始的時候,你是用賽夏語在跟大家打招呼嗎?

maya’

Dana

Oh, how do we pronounce it?

maya’

’ita’ saboeh kayzaeh!

Dana

’ita’ saboeh kayzaeh!

maya’

Dana

We just like to keep it casual but we also like to say just like in your textbook here in Taiwan how are you. And when we really know someone then you can say What's up? Everything good? Or we can say How’s your day? How’s your weekend? It is really basic and easy.

And how about SaySiyat language

maya’

So’o kayzaeh ay?

So’o baba:ok ila ay?

Dana

So’o baba:ok ila ay?

maya’

So’o baba:ok ila ay?

Dana

yako baba:ok ila!

maya’

Dana

yako haysiya kitoyae’en.

maya’

Dana

We only say how are you? Are you ok? But we don’t really say* are you full? Have you eaten?* So I think that is really interesting.

Dana

And maya’ you said something in your language that I did not understand in the beginning. Were you introducing yourself?

maya’

Dana

Yay. What you said is really fascinating. Your name is very long and it has a very interesting meaning. With English it is a little bit similar, but it’s also different. Like my first name Dana, that’s the name that was given to me. It’s my name. And it was given, of course, by my parents. And the middle name is this special name that can be from your family or even friends or someone in your community. And then your last name is your family name. That’s the name that’s passed down generations to generations.

So when you first meet someone, how do you ask them their name in SaySiat language?

maya’

So’o Sin hiya’en?

Dana

So’o Sin hiya’en?

maya’

Dana

yako Dana.

maya’

So’o SIn hiya’en?

Dana

yako Dana. 我是Dana。

maya’

Dana

Wow! This is really my first introduction to your beautiful language. Thank you so much for showing me this and I hope all of our listeners will learn how to speak it much better than me.

So now we are gonna try to repeat some of the words that we have learned today, Are you ready?

maya’
