When coworkers hold a position instead of identifying their own needs and the other person's needs, conflict is likely to escalate because 1) someone won't get their needs met and 2) at least one person is likely to feel as if he/she was not heard, understood, or supported. 
A lack of effective negotiation skills between coworkers can leave people feeling de-valued, underappreciated, extremely frustrated, and cause low morale.
