Don't Blame The Mom

EP134: The Murder Of Amber Hagerman, Origins Of The Amber Alert

Listen Later

Crime talk timestamp : 12:42 minutes in

It was January 13th 1996 in Arlington, Texas as 9 year old Amber Hagerman was riding her bike in an abandoned car park with her little brother. As it was mere yards from her grandparents home & also broad daylight in the middle of the afternoon no one would have thought that anything bad could happen.

However, this was not the case & the lives of Amber's family were about to be turned upside down forever in a horrific turn of events .

Because Amber was suddenly snatched from her bike by a stranger, thrown screaming into a truck & in a matter of seconds she had completely vanished never to be seen alive again.

After a four day intense search & numerous media appeals to her abductor to release the little girl, Amber was tragically found murdered in a creek.

Although she could not be saved, since her horrific murder she has posthumously helped to save the lives of thousands of other children.

This is thanks to an emergency alert system that was put in place & rolled out across the United States. It meant whenever a child was abducted law enforcement would issue an urgent alert telling the public to be on the lookout for the child, abductor or vehicle in which they were taken in. A critical tool that has proven to be highly effective in saving many abducted children that is known as the 'Amber Alert' , named in honour of Amber Hagerman .

Although she leaves behind an incredible legacy it is also so important to know & remember that Amber's own abduction & murder is still sadly unsolved to this day.

Twenty nine years have passed but her killer could still be out there somewhere, & her family deserves to have justice for their little girl.  A girl who really loved the colour pink, climbing trees & riding her bike. Arlington police department are still actively working to solve her case & are also hoping advances in DNA technology may finally help narrow down her killer.....
