这一期我们聊了聊从小到大经历的一些“精英主义”教育，从小升初开始的内卷，到美国寄宿学校和UWC, and how these “elitist”/privileged backgrounds have influenced our decisions in college applications and, furthermore, career trajectories.

“国内的精英主义和我后来接触到的西方的精英主义还是不一样的。中国的‘精英主义’教育看起来可能更merit-based。当然也有一些问题，比如说大城市的背景本身就能提供更多资源，家里有钱也更容易接触到课外班等等，但总体来说是以成绩导向的阶级划分。但美国的精英主义教育的学校更让我感到像是在运作公司一样，它的名声非常重要，也会attract donation in a way that’s like marketing itself to others. 总的来说是非常资本运作的一种方式…也让我很清晰的意识到这个社会很多的不公平。”
“在我快从UWC毕业的时候，这个学校褪去了一些之前完美的光环。我也意识到在学校这方面很难塑造出一个没有dominant narrative、没有power hierarchy的学习环境。”
“By virtually being in Groton’s environment, 我看到的只有常春藤的学校，我甚至都没有办法想象自己如果不进的人生会如何，虽然这些现在看起来都not at all a big deal. 这些标签会帮助你一部分、会变成你的safety line, 能决定你这辈子过得再怎么样也不会太糟糕, but I think, once again, that we shouldn’t just reach for that bottom line but should, instead, reach for something that we truly enjoy. That environment certainly blinded people a little bit. 它好像会让人们看到这些非常‘精英’的title as something they are striving towards (rather than its content/experiences beyond it), and that’s a little problematic.”
“我的经济教授们经常说，在看数字的时候不能只看平均值—when you run a statistical regression, the coefficient that jumps out is often the average, 但这个平均值所不能反映的是那些很多在顶端和底部的outliers. 你刚刚说我们的这些 ‘nouns’ 决定了我们最差是什么样的，但是脱去这些学校的外衣，人生其实有千千万万种活法，我们也会变成这个社会上形形色色的人，只不过我们当中的一部分人会fulfill that narrative, 会顺着这个最标准的故事走向向前走。But how statistically representative is that average? Not everyone gets to be that. The whole trap of elitism, in my eyes, is just how wildly statistically inaccurate it is. 它其实是截取了一种很公式化、很标准的人生线路并以此印在他们的宣传册上去鼓舞一些后辈，这也是我觉得他们不诚实的地方。但无论怎么说，如果把我们的人生写成一个故事，我们两个现在也仍在走在这个所谓的‘正轨’上。”
“但也有个问题是，当这个trend变得很显眼的时候，许多本身摇摆不定的人会下意识地去加入这个标准化的人生道路。Just by having the trend there, to not go along with it and to resist it takes a lot of reasoning and courage…”
