Joel Manby - Husband, Father, CEO for over 25 years, Author of LOVE WORKS: Seven Timeless Principles For Effective Leadership.
Joel has been the CEO of Saab Automobile USA, Amazon Auto Sales, Herschend Enterprises, the largest family-owned theme park and entertainment company in the United States and SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment, a $1.4 billion entertainment company with well-known brands such as SeaWorld Parks, Busch Gardens Parks and Discovery Cove.
Currently, Joel is the non-executive Chairman of Orange, a non-profit organization dedicated to the development and distribution of student, youth, and next-generation curriculum to over 9,000 churches in 40+ countries.
In this episode, Joel and I discuss his book LOVE WORKS and how he came about writing it based on his tenure as a CEO and the lessons learned. We talk about how love is not necessarily being a soft leader and how we as leaders also need to be tough, firm, and decisive.
We discuss how kindness and truthfulness are extremely important when leading. We talk about conflict vs confront and how they are not the same. We must confront but we also must try to limit conflict. Disagreement with leaders and staff is not conflict. We discussed how leaders should lead through a crisis and listen to understand.
Joel also talks about how his devotion to being a CEO of a major corporation lead to a major storm that affected his personal life. Joel is very vulnerable about his mistakes and how he got through the storm.
