How do you lead a company of more than 900 employees through a pandemic? By taking a back seat... sort of. When Australia's largest convention facility, the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, was asked to prepare to be a Covid hospital and morgue, it was presented with the darkest vision anyone could imagine for its space.
But almost a year later, the MCEC is thriving with ideas that have come from the ground up, thanks to the leadership of its CEO Peter King. Guiding the center through an unprecedented hackathon to re-imagine its 70,000 square meter space, MCEC is bringing Hollywood movies and digital art galleries into its previously conference-focused spaces.
Quotes From Episode
"We did a huge amount of work in a short space of time to potentially become a 600 bed ICU hospital. Virtually within 24 hours of making that decision, the numbers just flattened a little bit ... and luckily (the government) decided to not go ahead with that and we haven't needed it. But the things we've had to contemplate you could never have dreamt of."
"I look back at this number of times and people deal with it differently. We were all on this difficult journey and even within my executive team at any one time I had people who were really struggling. At the same time, other people were just enthralled by the challenge and that would change again in another month or two."
"I think there is probably a percentage of our industry sitting there going, "God, I just want to get back to business as usual". But I just don't think business as usual is an option anymore and that's why we've chosen to go along a different pathway."
-Peter King
