When you listen to music, is it important for you to understand the lyrics? Or can you enjoy songs in different languages even if you don’t understand them? In Singapore, I feel like many people enjoy music from all over the world. Today, I’d like to talk about that.

歌詞がわからなくても、楽しめますか。

Can you enjoy them even if you don’t understand the lyrics?

シンガポールに来てから、少しびっくりしたことがあります。

After coming to Singapore, something surprised me a little.

それは、いろいろな国の歌を聞く人が多いことです。

That many people listen to songs from many different countries.

韓国の歌や、日本の歌、中国の歌。

Songs from Korea, Japan, and China.

そして、東南アジアや、英語の歌もあります。

Also songs from Southeast Asia and in English.

本当にいろいろです。

There is really a wide variety.

そして、もう一つ驚いたことがあります。

And there is one more thing that surprised me.

歌詞がわからなくても、楽しんでいる人が多いことです。

Many people seem to enjoy the music even without understanding the lyrics.

私は、それを見て、すごいなと思いました。

When I saw that, I thought it was amazing.

実は、私はあまり歌を聞くタイプではありません。

Actually, I’m not really the type who listens to music a lot.

でも、たまに聞くことはあります。

But I do listen sometimes.

そのときは、日本語か、少しわかる英語の歌が多いです。

At those times, I mostly choose Japanese songs or English songs I can understand a bit.

歌詞が少しでもわからないと、何の歌なのかわからなくて、あまり聞く気持ちになれません。

If I don’t understand even a little of the lyrics, I feel like I don’t really want to listen because I don’t know what the song is about.

もちろん、メロディーがいい歌も好きです。

Of course, I also like songs with nice melodies.

歌が上手だなと思うこともあります。

Sometimes I think, “Wow, they sing so well.”

でも、歌詞が全くわからないと、

But when I don’t understand the lyrics at all,

だんだん集中できなくなってしまいます。

I gradually lose focus.

最後までしっかり聞くことが、少しむずかしいです。

It becomes a bit hard to listen until the end.

お店で流れている音楽なら、気にしません。

If it’s just music playing in a shop, I don’t mind.

でも、自分で選んで聞くとなると、違います。

But when I choose music myself, it feels different.

意味がわからない歌を、自分から選ぶことはあまりありません。

I don’t often choose songs whose meaning I don’t understand.

だから、シンガポールの人たちを見て、驚きました。

That’s why I was surprised when I saw people in Singapore.

意味がわからなくても、好きで聞いている人が多いです。

Many people seem to listen to songs they like, even without understanding them.

メロディーがいいから聞く、という人もいます。

Some people listen just because they like the melody.

その気持ちは、とても自由だなと思いました。

I felt that way of enjoying music is very free.

もちろん、日本人の中にもそういう人はいると思います。

Of course, I think there are people like that in Japan too.

でも、私の周りでは、あまり見たことがありませんでした。

But around me, I hadn’t seen many.

特に、自分がわからない言語の歌を、

Especially songs in a language they don’t understand,

自分から選んで聞く人は、少なかった気がします。

I feel there were not many people who chose to listen to them.

もしかしたら、シンガポールの環境も関係しているかもしれません。

Maybe the environment in Singapore is related.

いろいろな言語や文化がある場所です。

It’s a place with many languages and cultures.

だから、違う言語にも自然に慣れているのかもしれません。

So people may be naturally used to different languages.

それに比べて、日本では、

Compared to that, in Japan,

外国語にふれる機会が少ない人も多いです。

many people have fewer chances to experience foreign languages.

だから、違いがあるのかもしれませんね。

So that might be one reason for the difference.
