Life is filled with illusions.
I live in what is considered a first world country but it feels like a first world zoo. Instead of being behind a concrete enclosure, we are behind an easily climbable chain-link fence. The entrapment of the fence is an illusion but we are comfortable behind it because of the timely dropping cost of food or the notion it could be worse.
I remember as social media became more prevalent, people began displaying extravagant means while informing the masses they can have the same thing. The salary and time that would require; mentally I began to run the numbers(it felt like a scam). It was almost impossible. You would need a full support staff or a mini production company to garner the amount of wealth displayed. Even Robin Leech made it clear that this was the lifestyle of the rich AND famous.
This was different from seeing the lifestyle of the rich and famous because that meant they had the ways and means to do it. Today we have everyone pretending to have something they don’t to be seen by people that wouldn’t normally look in their direction. Whether that something is money, beauty, or intelligence most seems to be an illusion.
Can we be naked again and feel valued? Not literally naked. Just return back to some sense of normalcy that didn’t require putting on airs. What do I know, when I start drinking I argue with strangers about personal agency.
It is starting to feel like that one ‘Black Mirror’ episode again.
