Joffre: How have you been and it is a little more formal. What do you think?

John: I think that if it follows maybe something else anothergreeting “how ‘ve you been?”. Then it’s welcoming somebody to tell how your family is. How work is being. How’ve you been that’s a little bit more I think asking for more detail about how things have been going

Joffre: Exactly. And switchingto Spanish: Es lo mismo en español Isai. Si alguien nos dice “como has estado” o “como te ha ido”, se siente que hay un mayor interés en esa persona en saber en realidad como estas. Porque “What’s up?” o “¿Que hubo?” o “¿Quiubo?” o “Que más” es algo superficial, algo rápido. Pero “¿Cómo has estado?” o “¿Cómo te ha ido?” es más… la persona se interesa más en ti. ¿Qué opinas Isai?

Isai: Si. Es correcto. Cuando escuchó esta… si alguien me preguntará “¿Cómo has estado?”. Entendería que esa persona está realmente interesada en saber cómo fue mi día o qué hay de nuevo conmigo o qué pasa con mi familia, como dijo John, con mi trabajo. Se interpreta que hay un interés detrás de esa pregunta. A diferencia de las que ya hablamos anteriormente. Algo como dice Joffre, algo más superficial que quizás es un mero formalismo.

Joffre: Correcto y lo interesante de esta pregunta que utiliza en inglés “have” y en español “ha” porque es “cómo te ha ido” “How have you been”. Entonces la respuesta en español sería “me ha ido bien” o “no ha pasado nada”.

Isai: Si. La respuesta correcta sería esa: “me ha ido bien”. Pero quizás podemos jugar un poco con la respuesta y puedes ir directamente a lo que te ha sucedido últimamente., Si alguien dice “cómo has estado” podría decir “bien, sigo trabajando igual que siempre” quizás, o “Sigo de vacaciones” o “Estoy visitando a mi familia, a mis amigos”.

Joffre: And switchingto English. Marty What do you think is the best option to answer “How have you been?”?

Marty: I will normally answer that. “I’ve been fine”. You can have certain number of different ways depending on what your circumstances are. You could say. “I’ve been very busy lately.” “I’ve been doing a lot of interesting things.” But there are number of ways that you could answer a question like that. You can go into more detail if you feel that the person is somebody that you want to share more intimate types of your experiences as with.

Joffre: Exactlyand you will use “have” there like: “I have been doingwell” or “I have been doing something”

Marty: exactly.

Isai: So Marty. Ihave a question. So can we answer these question by saying“I’mall right” instead of “I have been okay”, or…

Marty: Yeah, you could say that you could say “I’mall right.” “I’mdoing well.” You could tell them about you know, how you been feeling or you can answer to number of different ways but that would be correct as well, what you said.

Joffre: what do you think John what is the best way to answer that question? How have you been?

John: I thinkit sounds best is somehow say “Ihave been” to speak somehow in past tense, because I think that’s kind of getting you up to speed with maybe since the last time you saw themor how things in general have been for you. So I think it sounds most natural in my thinking to say something about “I’ve been doing well”, “it’s been busy” something referringsince it was asked in a past tense form to respond in the past tense form.
