Epilepsy Advocate Chris M. introduces the second season of Epilepsy Advocate Radio. Chris will talk to two Epilepsy Advocates and an epileptologist who will discuss how striving for optimal seizure control makes it possible to live beyond the boundaries of epilepsy.

Alyssa K. recently graduated from community college and is now attending a four year university.
In high school, Alyssa was experiencing seizures and was not ready to move away from home to attend college. Alyssa decided that her situation was definitely not good enough. So by working with her doctor, she found different medical options that helped control her seizures, and gave her the courage to move away from home and gain a new sense of independence.

Heather E., a busy wife, mother and scholar, has overcome many challenges to get where she is today in her seizure freedom. Heather shares her journey and how she lives beyond the boundaries of epilepsy everyday. Just recently, Heather achieved a huge milestone of regaining her driver’s license!

Chris M. interviews Dr. Cantrell, an epileptologist at the North Texas Neuroscience Center in Dallas. Dr. Cantrell shares encouragement on how you can become an empowered patient to get the most out of your medical care and achieve life goals beyond seizure management. Dr. Cantrell also offers guidance on working with your doctor to achieve seizure control with minimal side effects.

LaKeisha P. has overcome some major obstacles. As a young woman, LaKeisha got into a serious car accident and learned she had epilepsy. She couldn’t work because of her injuries, and as a result lost her house. After recovering, LaKeisha is now committed to getting her education and today, this mother of three is about to complete her degree in Christian Ministries thanks to the 2010 UCB Family Epilepsy Scholarship.

Epilepsy Advocate Radio host Chris M. interviews Tib Holland, Director of Development at Canine Assistants, a non-profit that provides seizure-response dogs to deserving people living with epilepsy to help them live independently. Seizure-response dogs are specially trained to perform tasks that help people living with epilepsy, like remaining next to the person during a seizure, summoning help, or retrieving a phone prior to the seizure when indicated by the recipient.

Epilepsy Advocate Amy W. shares her family’s story of how a very special dog named Lucia helps her eleven-year-old son, Spencer live more independently with epilepsy.

Epilepsy Advocate Chris M. previews the “Real Challenges and Real Successes” show, which highlights the obstacles people have faced when diagnosed with epilepsy and real life success stories.

At 40 years old, Epilepsy Advocate Marla H. was already experiencing multiple life challenges. She was unhappy with her marriage and contemplating divorce, raising three teenagers and pursuing her undergraduate degree in interdisciplinary studies. As if that wasn’t enough, she also experienced her first seizure. The resulting epilepsy diagnosis posed a whole new set of challenges. Marla had to find the right doctor, cope with driving restrictions and regain her confidence in order to move forward with her life.

Epilepsy Advocate Rick S. was diagnosed with epilepsy during his first year of college – a time when most young people are beginning to assert their independence. Instead, Rick struggled with how to cope with an epilepsy diagnosis and resulting depression. Rick now has his seizures under control, managed his depression and regained his independence.
