As a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, conductor, and composer/arranger, Dr. Selva has served in numerous roles in both jazz and classical music. He has performed as a featured saxophone soloist at Detroit’s renowned Orchestra Hall and in engagements throughout the United States and Europe. He has been involved with the Milwaukee Symphony on saxophones and flute and has worked with chamber ensembles in the Chicago area. As music director of the Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii, he provided both liturgical and artistic musical direction for the oldest continuing Italian-American Community in the city. As a composer, Dr. Selva has been commissioned to write original music by World Library Publications as well as professional ensembles in Chicago. He has worked in music publishing, recording, and broadcasting and has been featured on regional and national television and radio broadcasts as well as in national publications highlighting his music and career. Dr. Selva was appointed as Director of Jazz Studies in 2009 at Schoolcraft College where he developed a dynamic Guest Artist Series.

Dr. Selva’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and three graduate degrees including a doctorate from the Northwestern University Bienen School of Music in Evanston, Illinois. At Northwestern, his major advisor was Dr. Frederick L. Hemke renowned saxophone virtuoso, pedagogue, and scholar. Dr. Selva has been involved in supporting music and music education through his participation in school, church, college, community, and professional organizations throughout the mid-west.

Michael Vacca is the Director of Ministry, Bioethics, and Membership Experience at Christ Medicus. He is the Managing Editor of the International Catholic Jurists Forum, chair of the Healthcare Civil Rights Taskforce and founding board member of Sidewalk Advocates for Life.

The Chaldean Language Workshop graduation ceremony is at Oakland University this Friday, April 17th. Stephen Hannawi is back with us to speak about the growth of the workshop, the preservation of the Chaldean language, and the impact students are already having in helping Chaldean-speaking patients communicate in healthcare settings.

The Chaldean Language Workshop, founded by OU Graduate Student Stephen Hannawi, currently meets twice a week on campus and invites participants to come learn about the Chaldean alphabet, grammar, and pronunciation in an engaging and academic setting.“I founded the CLW to preserve and revive one of the world’s oldest and most influential languages — the Chaldean language — which once served as the language of Babylonian science and later became the language of the Word of God in early Christianity,” said Hannawi, who is pursuing a master’s degree in artificial intelligence at OU.

Stephen Hannawi, whose interests include law, technology and linguistics, began reading and writing Chaldean at 8 years old, a foundation that deeply influenced his lifelong commitment to cultural and linguistic preservation. He was inspired to create the CLW while attending Cooley Law School.

Robert Collins, MD, is a professor of internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where he specializes in blood cancers. He directs the Hematologic Malignancies and Cellular Therapy Program and the Combined Adult and Pediatric Stem Cell Transplant Program. He is a recipient of the Watson Award, the institution’s highest honor in clinical medicine.

Sr. Piper Klatt is a member of the Women of Jesus’ Merciful Passion, a new community of consecrated women who live and serve at The Shrine of Jesus The Divine Mercy.

Born and raised in a Catholic family in Northern Minnesota, Piper experienced God’s call to religious life during her junior year at Franciscan University. The call came while she was on a pilgrimage to the Divine Mercy Shrine in Kraków, Poland. Three years later, she joyfully responded to the Lord’s invitation.

She gives all thanks and praise to God for leading her to the Shrine, where she now dedicates her life—alongside the other Consecrated women in the community—to spreading God’s mercy to the world.

Haley McNamara is the Senior Vice President of Strategic Initiatives and Programs at the National Center on Sexual Exploitation. She leads joint campaigns within areas of legislation, litigation, and corporate advocacy regarding the full web of sexual exploitation issues. Her advocacy work has contributed to policy improvements in social media, online advertising, retail, and hotel industries. She has advocated at the United Nations, led international coalition campaigns, presented to Danish, Croatian, Colombian and Rwandan government officials, and more.

Haley is a former member of the Washington DC Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Child Abuse and Neglect. This Committee advises DC Mayor Muriel Bowser on the multi-faceted continuum of the District of Columbia’s child welfare services, including prevention, early intervention, treatment, and sources of permanency.
