In today's sermon, Father Casey explains how Jesus transforms Lamech’s seventy-sevenfold vengeance in Genesis into seventy-sevenfold forgiveness in Matthew's Gospel. The Christian faith centers not only on receiving God’s forgiveness through Christ, but extending forgiveness to others. Rather than perpetuating cycles of retaliation, grudges, and violence, Christians are called to embody overwhelming mercy, love their enemies, and live what they pray.

Following Jesus requires more than calling him Lord. It means leaving behind worldly assumptions about power, success, safety, wealth, and victory. Jesus reveals a different way through sacrificial love. Peter eventually learns this lesson, as does tFr. Casey’s example of Dolly Parton: divine values can transform how we live within the world.

At Caesarea Philippi, Jesus’ question—“Who do you say that I am?”—becomes a personal invitation to faith. Father Casey’s sermon explores grace, the limits of reason, and the necessity of commitment.
