Relatable Leader

Episode 001 Enthusiasm, Analogy, and Performance Management

Listen Later

In this episode I take you to Sante Fe with me to talk with a restaurant owner. You will learn why it's important to make sure each employee on your team can talk with confident enthusiasm about his/her job.

Listen to hear about how you can use analogy as a powerful employee coaching tool. I provide you with a specific example used by one manager with a direct report to achieve a quick turn around in that employee's behaviors.

I also offer you the Performance Management Worksheet I created to ensure consistent quality communication with all supervisors and managers in an organization. Coaching performance management is one of your most important responsibilities in a leadership role. Whether you are coaching continued performance or improved performance, the quality of YOUR communication determines how the employee feels as a result of the coaching discussion.

This week focus on:

- How you talk about your job. Challenge yourself: do you talk and act as if you like your job?

- Observe the people on your team. Prepare them for making positive introductions and talking about their work with confidence.

- Know your individual team members. If you were to use analogy to coach them, which topic would be most inspiring for each person on your team?

- Consistency of your communication between employees when you are leading continued behaviors or behavior change. Employees must believe they aren't being singled out and that you have the same types of discussions with all employees on your team.
