The project purpose was to implement a comprehensive pressure ulcer prevention program with the implementation of evidence-based interventions and staff education to reduce hospital-acquired pressure
ulcers. Hospital-acquired pressure ulcers are a complication threatening many hospitalized patients and may lead to increased morbidity and mortality. Factors contributing to pressure ulcer development include
advanced age, altered mentation and sensory perception, impaired circulation, malnutrition, immobility, and surgical procedures. Treatment costs can be substantial. Identifying at-risk patients and development of
a targeted approach for prevention is vital. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services view pressure ulcers as preventable and not reimbursable, further challenging hospitals to develop prevention programs. A literature search that generated evidence-based guidelines for assessment and prevention was conducted. This provided the necessary support for the hospital interventions employed to decrease pressure ulcer incidence.
