A new Temporary Abdominal Closure concept: Active Abdominal Therapy.

The surgical treatment of patients suffering from peritonitis, abdominal compartment syndrome or in case of damage control surgery with an open abdomen (OA) is common place. There are clear advantages but also challenges to leaving the abdomen open instead of closing and possibly reopening it. Once decided leaving the abdomen open the need for a temporary abdominal closure (TAC) is essential. Among the different solutions to the problem of dressing the open abdomen every closure technique got its advantages and disadvantages.

All in common however scheduled as well as required dressing changes and peritoneal lavages mean a time and cost-intensive challenge for the nursing and medical personnel. Further risks are spontaneous formation of fistulas, risk of evisceration with nosocominal transmission due to the patient�s fluids and lateralization of the abdominal fascia in sense of a frozen abdomen as the worst scenario.
