Juvenile detention centers, like adult correctional facilities, vary in security levels and conditions. In a juvenile detention centre, there is a greater emphasis on academic instruction and programs that teach young offenders new thought and behaviour strategies to help them avoid committing future offences.

Most youth detained in juvenile detention centers have been exposed to trauma in the form of community and family violence. These youth are at higher risk for mental and substance use disorders. ... In adult facilities, youth under 18 are two times more likely to commit suicide than adult inmates.

These children lose more than their freedom when they enter adult prisons; they lose out on the educational and psychological benefits offered by juvenile-detention facilities. Worse, they are much more likely to suffer sexual abuse and violence at the hands of other inmates and prison staff.
