She has had a distinguished career in public service, in national Democratic and LGBTQ+ politics, and as education director of an award-winning nonprofit serving Appalachian youth. She's also been a substitute teacher, a veterinary assistant, a landscaper, a bookseller, a farm hand, a fast-food worker, and a camp counselor.
