Welcome to What The Heck season 3! This podcast explores unexplained phenomena using stories gathered from various sources, then applies an academic research method to find theories and solutions for each one. So far, we've been unsuccessful in finding any concrete answers, but one of the stories we've covered has been solved. Christmas has been a very busy time for me, so I'm playing catch up! Episodes will drop to weekly so I can do this, but each one will contain a main episode and a creature feature!
This week, we're looking at the Florence UFO in the main episode. In the 1950s, a football game in Italy was stopped by a floating object in the sky. 15 minutes later, it had gone, and blanketed the area in a white substance that some described as glittery. Reports had been coming in of a strange object in the sky for days but hadn't been taken seriously. After 10,000 or more people had seen it though, all that changed- leaving a mystery in its wake.
In the creature feature this week, we're looking at the Girt Dog of Ennerdale. In 1810, the hamlet of Ennerdale Bridge was plagued by a creature that killed somewhere between 300 and 400 sheep. Farmers tried to stop it, but failed. They called in hunters with a reward, but the creature proved too crafty for them. Eventually though, the hunters won and the dog was killed and put on display in a museum until the 1950s.
What was the Florence UFO? What was the white substance? Did anyone manage to get a sample of it? Where is Ennerdale? What did the Girt Dog look like? Who killed it, and how? Listen in to find out!
