What the Heck?

Episode 108- The Disappearing Ship, and Creature Feature 64- The Palace of Ghosts

Listen Later

Welcome to What The Heck season 3! This podcast explores unexplained phenomena using stories gathered from various sources, then applies an academic research method to find theories and solutions for each one. So far, we've been unsuccessful in finding any concrete answers, but one of the stories we've covered has been solved. Christmas has been a very busy time for me, so I'm playing catch up! Episodes will drop to weekly so I can do this, but each one will contain a main episode and a creature feature!

This week, we're looking at the ghost ship, the Sea Bird in the main episode. In the 1700s, the Sea Bird beached itself on Easton's Beach, Rhode Island. Onlookers bravely went aboard, only to discover that the only living things on the ship were a cat and a dog. According to some versions of the story, the ship disappeared again overnight. In the late 19th Century, a story appeared in the newspapers about one of the members of the crew who had managed to get off the vessel, revealing a very dark story.

In the creature feature this week, we're looking at the ghosts of Hampton Court Palace. This episode starts with a history of the palace and how it became the tourist attraction it is today. During this history, I call Princess Catherine the Prince of Wales, which is a mistake. After the history, I guide you through the ghosts that have been recorded in the palace. There are some spooky tales in this one!

What happened on the Sea Bird? Did anyone escape? How did the ship disappear overnight? When was Hampton Court turned into a palace? Who lived there? Who are the ghosts, and what have they been seen doing? Listen in to find out!
