For Pint of Science 2021, Dr Niamh Chapman interviewed Dr Jordi Nelis about his innovative approach to food safety.

Smartphone-based devices for allergen detection have the potential to empower people with food allergies to check if food is safe themselves. For technology like this, accuracy is so important particularly as sensing allergens can be extremely difficult in processed foods as the shape and way we identify the allergen is changed with things like heating, cooling or fermenting.
