Being married for 50 years used to be fairly common.  Now we celebrate it as some kind of unique milestone that only the few among us can never achieve.  There used to be a time when you would it work for a company for 30 or 40 years, and then drift off into retirement with the pension for the rest of your life.  People used to go to the same church for their entire life, but that's not what we see today.

Where did our level of commitment go?  We give a vow on the altar, only to be divorced a few years later.  We tell the interviewer we want to grow roots in a company and then leave six months later.  Some of us even raise our right hands only to find a way out before the end of our contract.  Things have definitely changed over the last few decades but I still believe there is incredible value in commitment.
