For 19 months in the early 1970s, Alcatraz was peacefully occupied by indigenous activists seeking to raise awareness of their treatment by the US government. Using the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie, they reclaimed the island and sought to establish a cultural education center for all indigenous people. Though ultimately unsuccessful, the occupation helped bring to light the harsh policies of the government toward indigenous people. #WikiSleep #Alcatraz #Sleep #MentalHealth
