Episode 114 - Uncovering the Roots of Our Relationship with Food

Listen Later

When we’ve tried all the diets, the rigorous training programs, expensive supplementation and still feel like we cannot climb the mountain of aesthetic or health hopes, it might be time to look inward rather than outward.

This introspection is one of the most avoided, yet vital, steps in truly making a lifestyle change. It goes beyond dropping a few pounds for that vacation or slimming down for a wedding. Instead of looking outward again (new diet, new program, more supps, new trainer, different gym, etc.) we must take the uncomfortable, potentially dark, look inward.

It’s painful because it involves coming to a legitimate realization that our harmful eating habits stem from places we don’t like to discuss or question: societal/cultural conditioning, upbringing, scarcity, traumatic events, low self-worth, mental/emotional disorders, etc. This realization, then the subsequent unlearning and habitual rewiring, is a process that cannot be solved by simply trying another new diet. It may involve cognitive therapy, self-forgiveness, medication, or even an intervention. This can be related to both overeating and undereating.

If we’re not moving in the right direction with our health and eating habits, it’s because the unhealed roots are still firmly in place, and without addressing these roots and severing them, we go nowhere.
