Hello, and welcome to Your Greek Word On A Sunday, a weekly, bite-size podcast for anyone curious on language, etymology and connections. I am your host, Emmanuela Lia and wherever you are in the world, if you want to entertain your brain for a few minutes, this is the podcast for you. Let's Go!

Τάλαντο (talanto) in Ancient Greece and many other ancient civilisations was a mass measuring unit. The standard was One talanto equals the amount of water an average amphora (a jug ) would carry. Each country had their own jugs for measure.  The talanto was also the weight unit for commercial transactions. If such a coin had ever been produced in Ancient Greece, it would weight approximately 25 kilos that’s 57 pounds or you! And the Homeric talanto was the weight of a cow! After the unit was used as measuring value in a parable in the New Testament, the word came to mean a god given gift and it stayed. ΤΑΛΑΝΤΟ/TALENT.
