Hello, and welcome to Your Greek Word On A Sunday, a weekly, bite-size podcast for anyone curious on language, etymology and connections. I am your host, Emmanuela Lia and wherever you are in the world, if you want to entertain your brain for a few minutes, this is the podcast for you. Let's Go!
Ιω (Io) was a high priestess of the goddess Hera and another of Zeus’s lovers. When Hera found out about the affair, Zeus transformed Io into a cow to protect her from being found. But Hera was used to his tricks and made him renounce the affair by surrendering the cow. And so he did. The cow was guarded day and night by Argos the creature with 1.000 eyes. Zeus was devastated and asked Hermes to find a way to free her. Hermes, a master on playing the lyre , put Argos to sleep and killed him before freeing Io. And that’s when her journey begun. She was trying to get as far away as possible when Hera found out she escaped and send Οίστρος (Oestros) an ox fly, to follow her everywhere and sting her so she would have to keep moving, keep trying to get away. One of the first places she had to run through was one of the biggest seas. And it was named after her. ΙΟΝΙΟΝ ΠΕΛΑΓΟΣ/IONIAN SEA
