Episode 132: 132 - WHAT DISABILITY - James Parr
In this episode of the Secret MENS Business podcast we speak to James Parr about how his life got turned upside down after getting cancer in his ankle, and then having to have his foot amputated. His story is more than just inspiring, it demonstrates how ones mind can create adversity if challenged.
James Parr was diagnosed in August 2019 with a rare form of bone cancer ‘osteosarcoma’ and after several months of chemotherapy his right leg was amputated below the knee.
How does a diagnosis and resulting amputation of his leg affect such a young man?
“Well, it didn’t impact on me too much as I kept getting a lot of infections and I just wanted it to be over,” James who underwent chemotherapy for almost six months after his surgery, said.
“I was back in the gym 10 days later, challenging myself to see what I was capable of.
“I had the artificial leg fitted a month later and didn’t particularly enjoy going into rehabilitation, I just wanted to get on with it.
“I experienced some phantom pain early on after the surgery but it rarely happens now, it’s a strange kind of pain.”
Today James is disciplined in his training regime, up at 5.30 am six days a week, putting in the hours with swim training, Cross-fit and strengthening, running and cycling to become more competitive in the three disciplines.
He also consumes a healthy high protein diet, which includes 1 kg of fruit and vegetables daily.
James works in education support at Cobram Primary School while studying to become a teacher.
Before this he held a similar role at Cobram Specialist School.
In what little spare time he has, he is also establishing demand from several advertisers as a photographic model.
While James admits he has a long road ahead as a triathlete, he is prepared to do the hard yards and has the determination to be the best version of himself at whatever he chooses to do.
