This episode of the Fearless Mindset Podcast is the third part of our conversation with Ric Peregrino, a former Marine, police officer, Blackwater executive, and current Managing Director of GBS International Strategic Consultants.
Any kind of operator in the EP scene benefits from having and offering a wider variety of skills. Ric suggests diversity so you can bid for more roles and look at security from a wider point of view. Aside from the reactive skills, Ric challenges agents to know how to plan for security especially when firearms are not involved.
GOLDEN NUGGETS
Train on preventive skills instead of just reactive skills - Ric: "You start learning the medical side, you've learned a good skill there, but if you look it another way, you've now trained yourself to look at how to prevent some things that may happen as well. So if you're only the hallway guy, the driver, and the shooter, if you will, the EMT-trained guy looks at things a little bit differently. He also looks at the same things you do, but he's adding a broad way to look at those. If you become a security risk assessor, same thing."
Expand knowledge to become valuable to different security departments - Ric: "Executive protection really is only one skillset or one avenue of what the entire corporate security structure is. So, you mentioned as a former chief security officer, so our programs spanned a large number of jobs. We owned aviation companies, we owned maritime companies, logistical trucking companies, warehousing, and so that's corporate security. And executive protection was only a small part of that."
