Episode 137: Vanished - Sandra Hughes

Listen Later

Nature promises peace. Tranquility. A kind of freedom so many of us chase when life feels loud. For Sandra Johnson Hughes, known as Sandy, that pull toward the outdoors wasn’t an escape. It was a way of life. Sandy was free-spirited, constantly on the move, drawn to wild places and wide-open spaces. In early 2020, she relocated from Maui to California, just as the world was beginning to shut down. When COVID-19 lockdowns took hold and people retreated indoors, Sandy did the opposite. She headed into the Sierra National Forest on a solo camping trip, something she’d done before. Sandy was an experienced outdoorswoman, a self-described survivalist. Steep terrain, isolation, wildlife, none of it scared her. But just days after she set out in late June of 2020, her campsite was discovered in complete disarray. Her belongings were there. Sandy was not. Nearly six years later, there are still no answers. Some hikers and hunters claim they’ve seen her deep in the forest. Others believe she never made it out, some even say her spirit still lingers in the mountains. Yet Sandy’s family holds onto hope that she survived… that she’s still out there. So what really happened to Sandra Hughes in Madera County? In this episode, we dig into the timeline, the theories, and the haunting questions that remain unanswered. Because Sandy’s story isn’t over yet.
