Men are built to be loyal to their friends.  The problem is that this loyalty can lead to stagnation.  Having beers at the local bar with high school buddies is a classic progression thief.  It's hard, it's not an enjoyable thing you have to do, but it is necessary to lose those around you that aren't on the same trajectory as you.  Learn to do it early so you can do it more effectively later in life.
