Dreams of Consciousness

Episode 156: Yaotl Mictlan

Listen Later

Here is Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 156, featuring an interview with Tlatecatl of Yaotl Mictlan.
Just as Enslaved and Bathory found inspiration in their Scandinavian heritage, USBM trio Yaotl Mictlan draw from the pre-Columbian cultures of Central America. Along with Mayan and Aztec myths, the band employs traditional folk instruments and lyrics written entirely in Spanish, making them unique in the world of atmospheric black metal.
I spoke with vocalist/guitarist Tlatecatl about Yaotl Mictlan's history - both their own, and the Mesoamerican one that informs their music. We also discussed the folklore that inspired their latest album Sagrada Tierra del Jaguar, and the challenges of integrating traditional folk instruments in their recordings.
My thanks to Tlatecatl for speaking with me (and bearing with my terrible Spanish), and to all of you for listening.
