Imagine receiving (what feels like) a heartfelt apology and finding out it was actually an attempt to manipulate you. Unfortunately, this happens all too often. As we talked about in our last episode an effective apology can repair and strengthen a relationship and an ineffective one can further erode and sometimes destroy it. In this episode we'll get into how an apology can actually be a manipulation that is doing further harm to everyone involved, ways you may be manipulating or being manipulated and how to recognize these manipulation tactics. We'll also provide you with some additional tips and considerations for making an effective apology.

In this episode we cover:

  • Our villain eras...cynical or silly?
  • How manipulating someone impacts and compromises our needs
  • The destructive seeds manipulation plants
  • The importance of feeling our way through apologies
  • How an ineffective apology can create anxiety
  • When someone keeps bringing up something that happened a long time ago
  • Claire's experience of having a personal development tool used to manipulate her
  • Using the shame spiral as a form of manipulation
  • Centering the person who has been harmed
