Episode 16 - Balance is Bullshit

Listen Later

#sorrynotsorry for the #rant but the concept of balance (or how most health coaches talk about it) is bullshit.⁣ I don’t know why it annoys me so much but it does. When a health coach posts something that is seemingly “forbidden” if you are eating healthy... and says “balance!”. 🤦🏼‍♀️⁣

Does that annoy anyone else? 🤷🏼‍♀️⁣

When I was first trying to get healthy and lose weight (and still to this day!) I knew I had some food emotions to uncover and battle with. But you know what always annoyed me? The concept of excusing a seemingly forbidden food (ps: there are no forbidden foods) like eating a cookie and calling it “balance” or “treat yo self” or “cheat”.⁣

👉🏻No, Deborah, it’s called eating. Period.👈🏻⁣

Eating to FEEL GOOD and some days a glass of wine and 🍪 that I truly enjoy and makes me feel good. Most days a shit ton of veggies 🥗 and lifting heavy things makes me feel good. It’s not a treat, cheat or balancing anything out. I also think AS a Health Coach it can send a VERY mixed message - as in if you give yourself “permission” to eat like something “forbidden” then it’s okay. For those of us looking to lose weight, we wonder “how she does it” eating donuts all the time. It’s just not realistic.

I can’t be the only one who feels this because I know when I first work with clients they FEAR having to go “on a diet” because it means they can’t have “treats”. 👉🏻 Ditch the diet. You can eat whatever the hell you want as long as it matches your goals (you’ve gotta define those first!), you’re PRESENT (aka not emotionally out of control) when you’re eating it and don’t berate yourself for eating it.⁣

⁣Here are some tips to not losing your mind while trying to lose weight:

  • Identify your goals. Once you know what they are you can then say “does eating/moving/talking this way match my goals?”. It’s an easy yes or no.
  • Be mindful. One of the biggest things I work on with my clients is switching from reacting all the time to giving yourself pause and space to think. This takes a lot of undoing but even a simple breath paired with checking in on your emotional state can be enough to distance you from an emotional eating decision.
  • ENJOY THE DAMN FOOD. If you’re eating or drinking something and feeling guilty about it… it’s not worth it. I work on getting my clients to a place where they can eat in ways that FEEL good and aren’t laden with guilt and shame.
  • The Craft Your Life Method breaks that cycle of putting food on a pedestal and using it as a tool to deal with emotions. We work together to identify what triggers YOU (for me it’s work stress and peer pressure!) and redirect it to a more productive way that doesn’t end up face down in a bag of Oreos full of regret and frustration. This takes time AND coaching- and a shit ton of love ❤️ for yourself. But it’s worth it to never view food as a treat (you’re not a damn dog) again.⁣

Alright. That’s all I have to say {for now}. Does this concept of “balance”, “treat” or “cheat” make anyone else crazy?!

How I’m Unf%&king My Mindset: Traffic. Most of us deal with it in way that does NOT benefit us. It’s still when you think about it… getting mad for being behind other cars who are also driving on the road, not matching your expectations for pace or destination? Letting your blood pressure rise because someone else is driving differently is NO BUENO. The first thing you can do is give yourself PLENTY of time to get to where you’re going (take control of the situation). The second is to find ways to ENJOY the time. Perhaps you have a rock star playlist or listen to your favorite podcasts on your commute OR it’s the time you enjoy si
