On September 21, 1987, arbitrator Thomas Roberts ruled that MLB owners had colluded to restrict the free agent market during the 1984-1985 offseason. It was the first of three such rulings that would cost owners money, credibility, pennants, and players, and would set the stage for baseball's labor negotiations for the next 30 years.
