Episode 16 | Hadrians Wall Path

Listen Later

In this episode, we have a little catch-up and we chat about our hike along Hadrian's wall. A few things we learnt along the way, things to pack and what we definitely don't need to pack next time!

Our walk took us all along the path starting in Wallsend, Newcastle to Bowness on Solway, Carlise (Coast to Coast). The official path takes us 84.5 miles from point A to B. The wall was commissioned by Emperor Hadrian to protect the Roman empire against the Scottish barbarians. At the time it was built in 122 AD, the Roman empire stretched 5,000km from Arabia to this northernmost point. Considering this wall stretched 74 miles in length, only 9% remains to be seen, with the rest being taken away to be repurposed or stolen to build locals houses. The most relevance to Hadrian's wall in pop culture nowadays was the inspiration, George R.R Martin took to build the wall in the north in the Game of Thrones tv series.

We did it in 5 days, wild camped for the first 3 nights and then decided we needed showers on the other nights. Not only was this an amazing experience but it was a great time to get out in the country and away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. If we could suggest 5 things that are of importance if you are considering walking the wall it would be these: Pack light, Wear good shoes, Pack lots of socks, pack waterproofs & bring some good company.
