In this week’s episode, I discuss the concept of “hypergamy”, a social science word used to describe a person marrying a spouse of higher “caste” or class than themselves, or “marrying up”.  Throughout history, it is not unusual for a woman to seek a mate that can protect and provide for her and her future offspring. Women often would choose a man who had access to the most resources.

Various forms of hypergamy have been practiced throughout history, including in India, Imperial China, Ancient Greece, and Europe. Today most people marry their approximate social equals, and in much of the world, hypergamy has decreased. So I encourage my single female clients to consider financial resources as well as other characteristics when choosing a potential partner for marriage.
