The Therapist Mom Podcast: Where Private Practice and Motherhood Collide

Episode 17: How To Advocate For Change While Caring For Ourselves with Dara Friedman-Wheeler, PhD & Jamie Bodenlos, PhD

Listen Later

On today’s episode, I am excited to introduce two guests, Dara Friedman-Wheeler, PhD and Jamie Bodenlos, PhD, who are licensed clinical psychologists and co-authored the book, Being the Change: A Guide for Advocates and Activists on Staying Healthy, Inspired, and Driven.

We dive into their advocacy work as they provide insights into ways we can advocate for change while caring for ourselves. They share ideas on how we, as therapists, can hold space for clients who need to process big topics like school shootings, Roe v. Wade, the Black Lives Matter movement, and more while we, as humans, are also reeling from daily news headlines.

They draw on strategies like values clarification, cognitive reappraisal/defusion, problem-solving, mindfulness, compassion/self-compassion, and social support to find a path forward to support clients while being gentle with ourselves.
