In May of 2005, Joseph Duncan broke into the Groene home and murdered Brenda Groene, her son Slade, and her boyfriend, Mark McKenzie. He then kidnapped 8 year old Shasta and 9 year old Dylan Groene. He sexually assaulted them for weeks before murdering Dylan in front of Shasta. Shasta survived and was found alive 7 weeks after she was kidnapped.
